About Alterfin

Created in 1994, Alterfin is a cooperative company that aims to promote sustainable development and improve the living conditions of socially and economically deprived people and communities worldwide by financing microfinance institutions and sustainable agriculture organisations (“partners”) in low—and low-middle-income countries.

The Alterfin team consists of 20 employees in Europe and 15 external consultants working in different countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. ‍

To cover a maternity leave, Alterfin is looking for a Legal & Compliance intern.

As Alterfin's Legal and Compliance Intern, you will, together with the Head of Legal & Compliance, prepare the legal documentation within the organisation (mainly loan agreements but also securities agreements, services agreements, etc).

You ensure compliance with the regulatory framework (AML, KYC, etc.) and all legal constraints applicable to Alterfin (internal and external).

Your responsibilities‍

You are responsible for:

  • You support the Head of Legal & Compliance in preparing legal loan documentation.
  • You assist the Head of Legal & Compliance with other legal documentation when needed.
  • You provide legal advice to the Head of Legal & Compliance and the CEO so that they can make informed decisions on various legal topics.
  • You closely follow up on the legal aspects of the recovery process for specific non-performing loans together with our Head of Credit Risk and our Head of Legal & Compliance.

Your profile

  • You are studying for a master's in Law.
  • An exposure to international, commercial and financial law is an asset.
  • You are interested in the microfinance sector.
  • You have a very good knowledge of English and Spanish. Knowledge of French and/or Dutch is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the legal system in one or more foreign countries (in Africa, Asia or Latin America) is a plus.
